an autonomous movement to defend the Eno Forest and fight gentrification in Durham, NC

After over 50 acres of forest are destroyed, 376 luxury townhouses are planned to be built on a location of black and indigenous heritage as well as a critical watershed along the Eno River in Durham, NC. The developer proposing the project, Keith Brown, is currently held up with bureaucratic challenges put forth by local environmental activists. Without a guarantee of success from this pressure campaign, an urgent and likely call to defend the river—and fight the developers—is in its beginning stages of circulation. Chapel Hill based developer, Sun Forest Systems, aims to clear cut 94-acres of forest along the south of the West Point on the Eno, adjacent to the Eno river. The company wants to build 278 townhomes and 101 single-family homes. The development would raize and build over Black Meadow Ridge, an area that is a buffer between the West Point park and neighborhoods. Black Meadow Ridge has been under discussion for possible conservation over the years.”

History at West Point West Point on the Eno, a natural and historic city park, is located along a two-mile stretch of the scenic Eno River. The 404 acres of woods, waters, and wildlife have changed little in the centuries since this area was the home of the Shocco and Eno Indians. This river valley was also attractive to the first white settlers, primarily farmers and millers, who arrived in the 1750's to earn their livelihood.
